Pattern Release—Le Soir

And about time, too!

This project, Mélodies, has been in my daydreams since December of last year, though Le Soir has been a picture in my mind since September of 2018. It’s finally here! This is going to be a longish ride; so if you’d like to cut to the chase and get to the pattern details and giveaway, feel free to skip down to all of those things—the subheads will guide you. If not, buckle up for the scenic route! (There will be pretty pictures.)

The Story

I can only describe this design as a happy accident—when I swatched for it exactly two years ago, I had no idea what I was doing. (Maybe I still don’t.) I have no recollection of why I chose to combine these stitches, in this way; and my only reason for the picot edging was that I was bored of plain garter selvedges. Somehow everything actually goes together. Despite the two years that have passed, it’s still one of my favorite designs I’ve ever created.

Somewhere in those two years, it became the nucleus of a geeky, over-ambitious project—a collection of four lace shawls inspired by French art song. As excited as I am about the next three shawls in the collection, I think this first design will always be a special one to me. Though perhaps it isn’t just the design; the journey of those 24 months has been nothing short of priceless.

As you can see, some tweaks have been made since that first swatching venture, the biggest of which is the dramatic change of yarn choice. The original swatch was a rustic 2-ply Peruvian wool; these two samples are in a round 4-ply merino-silk blend (white) and tightly twisted Blue-Faced Leicester (green). A big, big round of applause is due to Miss Babs for both of these yarns, Woodbury and Katahdin. They were so beautiful when they arrived I almost (note the almost) hated taking the skeins apart to knit with them, though the sample shawls were worth it in the end. I’ll be doing full-length reviews of both yarns in the coming weeks; but for now, here are a few teasers to enjoy!

When I was first conceptualizing this collection, I envisioned something ultra-fresh, luminous, and muted; but as the yarn support began arriving in the mail, something totally different began to emerge—rich, sumptuous, dramatic, moody. Dismay was my initial reaction; but after finally embracing the result I couldn’t be happier.

A fair question to ask right now would be “What exactly does this have to do with French art song?” Because Le Soir was an already-existing design at the inception of Mélodies, my approach to it was slightly different than with the other three designs; two them are completely new concepts, while the third is modified from a piece I wasn’t satisfied with.

In preparation for creating the collection, I listened to a lot of these songs; I was familiar with the genre at a basic level, but the repertoire was mostly new to me. As I tried to match a song with this shawl, the classic, understated feel, smooth melody, and flowing texture of Le Soir by Charles Gounod leaped out as a perfect fit. As each of the designs from Mélodies are released, I will link to my favorite recording of each namesake song at the end of the introductory post. Yes—this is why I took these pictures beside, around, and in a piano. (No pianos were harmed, of course.)

The Details

The shawl comes in two sizes, which is why there are two samples. The smaller, white shawl is essentially an extra-wide, extra-long scarf that can be thrown on top of outfits in the most careless way, and still look completely stylish and put-together—I almost always wear mine exactly as in the picture above, over a dress or tunic with the ends hanging free in front. The green shawl is deep, long, and luxurious, made to be draped and snuggled in (but elegant snuggling, mind you). The white shawl uses about 750 yards of fingering weight yarn, while the green shawl uses about 860 yards of light fingering weight. (Not just any light fingering weight—Katahdin knits up exceptionally well at a larger gauge than normal. For more on that, check back for my review in the coming weeks!)

Le Soir is available for $6 as an individual pdf download, via Ravelry and Lovecrafts as with all my self-published designs. It is also available in ebook form on both channels (links here and here), and currently can be purchased for a deep discount. As individual patterns are released, they will be added to the ebook and the price will go up. The publication and pricing schedule, which I first detailed here, has been updated to this:

  • September 2 to October 21—$14
  • October 21 to Release #3—$16
  • Release #3 to Release #4—$18
  • Release 4# and onward—$20

So if you like this design and want to snag it and the rest of the collection for only $14, make sure to do so before October 21! Dates will be added to this list as available. Once all four patterns are out, there will be a print book; a release date for that will be announced in the future.

I love the combination of delicate and intricate nups lace combined with long inches of intuitive repetition. Blackbird would be amazing when with a pale shade top

  2. Marcia says:

A beautiful shawl! I love the textures, lacework, and the graceful drape. I have been wanting a rectangle shawl for some time but didn’t care for the blocky, square ends on them The multiple points and picot edging give Le Soir a distinctive finish. I would go bold and make it in Dark Fury Katahdin.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thanks for your thoughts – and I love dark purples!

  3. crescendogal says:

“no pianos were harmed…” BAHAHA Firstly, as a professional musician the title grabbed me….and imagine my surprise by such a gorgeous design!!! I would make it in a rich burgundy or charcoal or forrest…oh, IDK – they’re all so beautiful! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your collection as you have a new fangirl here.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

So excited to ‘meet’ another knitting musician! 😁

  4. Jody Herriott says:

I really like the loooong borders on each end. I would make it in Spiked Punch purple, probably Woodbury. Although the Katahdin is nice yarn too! I loved some of the variegated colors but would stick to a solid to show off the lace textures to their full lovely advantage without distraction!

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thanks for your thoughts! Miss Babs does have the most incredible colors…

  5. Karla Hartzell says:

OH MY GOODNESS- I was stunned ( stopped in my tracks ) when I stumbled upon this blog give away post… What an exquisite item to have made with your own two hands….You’re a knitting genius.
rnguyen.gloria – I want one of these so very badly.
I love lace knitting and I will be forever working to improve my technique. Lace knitting expresses the inner workings of my soul. My favorite part of this pattern is the motif lace parts that look like the tops of Corinthian Columns after the chevron lace sections at the ends of the stole. They sit majestically perched atop those chevrons like the columnheads of royalty. WOW – Please choose me in your giveaway. I’d cherish this stole for a lifetime.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thank you for all the kind words – I’m so glad you like the pattern! I’ll be drawing the winner randomly; but either way I hope you’ll make and enjoy the stole!

  6. Christina B Oliver says:

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

  7. I love both shawls! The green and off white are beautiful. Can’t wait to cast on my gray lace weight.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

      Gray sounds fabulous! 😁

  8. Yvonne says:

I love the challenge and the drama of this design. Dark Fury Katahdin would totally do justice to it!

I’m so glad you like the design! It seems like Dark Fury is meant to be with it. 😁

  9. Maureen Welch says:

I love this beautiful feminine shawl. The lace stitches are delicate and interesting. I would use the color Sugar in Katahdin. I’ll be making this for sure.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Yay!! Sugar would be so lovely. I do hope you’ll make it and share some photos!

  10. Amber says:

I love the honeycomb looking middle, and I think it would be beautiful in Woodbury in Sweet Pea.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Lovely bright pink! Thanks for looking 😁

  11. Heather Kontoes says:

I love, love, love the lace at the neck! It would be so precious and pretty in the lovely pink Cat’s Meow!

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Cat’s Meow would be super sweet! 😍

  12. Carol says:

A lovely shawl, i think I especially like the variations in line and texture– i can see it in my favorite Woodbury color, Moss!

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

      Moss would be GORGEOUS!

  13. Anneke Gentry says:

I love the combination of stitches—reminds me of my grandmother’s tatting.
I love the color Field Mouse in Miss Babs Woodbury.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

So sweet that it reminds you of your grandmother! Field Mouse is an amazing colorway.

  14. Not sure what I like best about this but I love everything about it. It looks like something my mom would love, something my best friend would love, something my daughter-in-law would love – classic for all ages.

As far as color, I’ve loved White Peppercorn for a while and it is amazing for this project but Frog Belly is my all time favorite (and what I’m ordering to make this for me and I’m ordering White Peppercorn to make it for my best friend, whose birthday is coming up!

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thank you for the kind words – I’m so thrilled to hear that you’ll be making more than one! I’d love to see your projects; if you’re on Ravelry please do share them!

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thank you for your kind post and for sharing Le Soir – so glad you like the pattern!

    2. I will share there! Looking at colors now. I like that Katahdin comes in different size skeins. Maybe I’ll order Katahdin for one and Woodbury for the other. Still trying to decide.

      1. rnguyen.gloria says:

I love both yarns (which I plan to write rave review of soon 😁), but personally I really fell for Katahdin!

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thanks for your thoughts! Love that golden yellow!

This design is simply breathtaking. I would do it in Coventry because the cathedral there has always been a source of artistic inspiration and a place of peace.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

I’m so glad you like it! That soft teal is beautiful. I agree 100% about cathedrals – dreaming of a cathedral-inspired collection as we speak!

  18. Kelly says:

I like the elegance of it.
    I would choose Katahdin.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thanks for checking it out! I definitely fell hard for Katahdin working on this project. 😁

  19. Gretchen Thomas says:

Oh this is absolutely lovely!!!! The nepps remind me of snowdrops… I think I’d have to knit it in White Pepper as well, it is the PERFECT color for it!

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thank you, I’m so glad you like it! 😁

  20. Kathy says:

    Beautiful!

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

      Thank you! 😁

  21. This looks light yet comforting. I’m thinking it would look gorgeous in Silver Fog as a neutral, or Japanese Maple as the statement piece.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Either of those colors will be gorgeous!!

  22. Megan Smith says:

Oh, I want to make this in Katharine Rainforest! I’ve recently developed a love of Estonian knitting and I love the nupps in this pattern!

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Rainforest would be amazing! Yes, that stitch is based on traditional Estonian stitch patterns.

  23. Grace Cipriano says:

OMG This is GORGEOUS!!! I can just see this in Dark Fury…wow!!!

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thank you so much! It seems Dark Fury and this shawl are meant to pair up…

  24. Karola Wright says:

I love the drape of the Woodbury stole as well as the nupps, I’m torn between Pewter and Spiked Punch. But now I’m tempted to just buy the entire book now!

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

I’m so glad you like it! I’ll bet either of those colors would be stunning.

      1. Carol Andrews says:

What a beautiful piece of art ale Soir is! I love the fact that as my eyes trace the beautiful lacework, ridges and shapes in my mind I can hear the music! Thanks for sharing and yes, Khatadhin is the perfect shade for this shawl.

        1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thanks for your thoughts – I’m glad it makes you think of the music!

  25. Rosemary says:

I love the softness and elegance of this design. Knitted up in peppercorn which is my new favorite color makes it even more beautiful. I love the bobbles and different patterns within this piece. Think it would be fun to knit this up. One for me and one to gift.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thanks for your thoughts! I do hope you’ll give it a whirl – if you’re on Ravelry or Lovecrafts I’d love to see your project pics!

  26. Nicole Sender says:

What a gorgeous shawl! The lacework is wonderful and it would be a delightful challenge to knit this shawl. Katahdin in River Severn would be a stunning choice of yarn.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thank you for the kind words! River Severn would be awesome!

  27. ekatja says:

I love beautiful lace combinations and the lightness of the shawl
    I would have it in
Easy Sway – Katahdin or Purple Joy

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thanks for your thoughts! Either of those colors would be super fun 😁

  28. You’re going to make me pick between these lovely colors??? Oh, OK: Katahdin. What I like best? The stitch pattern combination. It is a gorgeous pattern and I love what inspired it.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thanks for your thoughts! This project definitely made a Katahdin fan out of me.

  29. Lynne Stucke says:

Wow! What a beautiful shawl! I love the combination of stitches . . . no boring repeating of the same stitches over and over for the entire length! ;-). I thing I would knit it in white pepper.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

I’m so glad you like it! 😁

  30. rebecca says:

I love the long drape of of the open chevron pattern at the end. I can imagine wearing it over a cocktail dress on a night out to see a ballet. I’d make it in something dark – lurch, second look, or maybe eternity – so that the color of the dress would shine through and show off the bold geometry of the chevron. It’s a perfect shawl to keep the chill of the theater off your shoulders while still looking elegant and a touch unique/special.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Any of those dark, rich colors would be amazing.

  31. Marilyn Baker says:

I really like all the different patterns in Le Soir, absolutely fun to knit and not too repetitive. It was a tough call between Faded in Woodbury and Stonewashed in Katahdin but Woodbury won out, although if I was able to touch them I might change my mind.

    1. rnguyen.gloria says:

I’m so glad you like it! Both of those blues are gorgeous 😁
