Today’s release is a special one. My supervisor at SweetGeorgia Yarns, Tabetha Hedrick, suggested that I create a capstone design to close out my time as a Designer in Residence at SweetGeorgia. She wanted me to push myself, try out some skills I hadn’t used before. Thaw is the result.
Thaw is an a-line pullover with a high v-neck and modified drop shoulder construction. The sleeves feature a simple ribbed lace pattern that reminds me of icicles melting—hence the name.
This design is relatively simple, but the actual design process was definitely a stretch for me. Tabetha’s been teaching me her formulas for different types of garment construction and shaping, but actually applying them is another cognitive step. Figuring out how much ease to add in which areas of the garment, how to grade some of the more complicated elements (such as the lace on the sleeves) and write up instructions for multiple sizes that don’t translate nicely to a block of text, were all quite challenging when I took this on several months ago. Already I can see how my process and my understanding of fit have improved between Thaw and my most recent garment design.
All the same, I’m very proud of Thaw and excited to finally release it! The pattern is available on Ravelry and SweetGeorgiaYarns.com. Since this design was a tricky one for me, I decided to use SGY’s Mohair Silk DK, one of my all-time favorite yarns, to ease the pain a little bit.
And since they want me to go out with a bang, SGY has put all the patterns I’ve published with them in the past year on sale! Until March 31, all the patterns in this bundle are 20% off on SweetGeorgia’s website and on Ravelry with the code RUTHROCKS2022 (they made up the code, not me, I promise…).
I’ve been so thankful for this residency; it’s been one of the best experiences of my career, and while it’s bittersweet to send the end coming up, I’m excited to continue my relationship with SweetGeorgia into the future, however that may look. For now, enjoy!
Well done, Ruth!👏
Thank you so much! 🙂
