It’s time to wrap up 2021—with one final release!
Today’s release is actually two separate patterns, the Cluaran Hat and the Cluaran Mittens. After the Cluaran Cowl came out in October, I realized I wanted to put the same thistle motif on all kinds of other things. My first concept was a shawl (which may materialize at a later date); but since I was short on time, this hat and mitten set were next on my list.
The Cluaran motif is fun to do, but it’s a lot—both from a visual standpoint and to knit. I decided to dial things back a bit for the hat and mittens, with just a few strategically placed thistles rather than an allover pattern. The resulting pieces have just enough patterning going on to keep things interesting, but they’re still accessible for a new brioche knitter. If you’re intimidated by two-color brioche, either of these accessories is a great place to start. They’re also a great option to do a quick test-drive the thistle motif before committing to the cowl.
And guess what? They’re stashbusters too! Either the hat or the mittens will use roughly 200 yards of fingering weight yarn, about 100 yards in each of two colors, or even less depending on your size. I used Miss Babs Yummy 2-ply in Sand Dollar and Black Salt; I used about half a skein of each color to make my samples. Both pieces are written for three sizes, so you can knit them for all your friends and family. Because Christmas is in three days, folks; and you bet you can make a few between now and then…
By the way, all the photos in this post are by my brother, who has become quite the shotgun sample photographer—I scout the location, pick the time of day, and set the camera; after that, he takes over. Didn’t he do a fabulous job?
Speaking of Christmas, this post wouldn’t be complete without a special sale! You can get 25% off all of my Cluaran patterns on Ravelry and Payhip through the end of Christmas Day. Use the coupon code THISTLES at checkout. I’ve linked to all the patterns on both platforms below:
I still can’t believe that this is my last post before Christmas. These designs seem like a fitting way to wrap up the year—easy, fun, and with a few little details that make them extra special. I’ll be back after the holiday!
