Design Sneak Peek

I Hope I’m Doing This Right

Last week I mentioned that I’m going through the process of creating my first garment design. There are several other announcements in that post (and pretty yarn pictures!); you can read that here. Surprisingly, I haven’t experienced any major disasters yet. Okay, a thing or two may need to be reworked. But overall, I think I will survive…hopefully the sweater will too!

I was good, and I swatched. Yes, these swatches are flat and portions of this sweater will be knit in the round, which brings me to my disclaimer for the day. Personally, I find that my gauge when swatching in the round is far less accurate to my actually sweater-knitting gauge because I tense up when knitting small circumferences; on the whole, swatching flat gives me far more accurate results.

So I swatched flat.

By the way, this lace pattern is so much prettier blocked! (Lace, go figure…)

It’s grown a few inches since these photos were taken. I was bound and determined to take this project with me when I went to see Black Widow on Tuesday, and I managed not to destroy it while knitting in the dark. My sincerest thanks to whoever was responsible (video editors? special effects magicians?) for all the well-lit portions of the movie where I could check when to alternate skeins.

And this is from a couple of days ago! As you can see, this sweater is worked bottom up in reverse stockinette (mostly—there are some surprise details!) with some selectively placed twisted stitches. I have a bit of a love affair with twisted rib; it’s so neat and orderly and defined! No funny business, no sloppy gaps, and it has a fabulous graphic quality with minimal effort. That single twisted stitch up the front and back is absurdly satisfying to me.

Again, I’m using SweetGeorgia Yarns Flaxen Silk Fine, a fingering weight silk/linen blend. It is scrumptious. The fabric is the most wonderful glossy, slinky, cool stuff you’ve ever felt. It’s elegant and light but isn’t so delicate that it’ll break if you sneeze while you’re working. It’s perfect for summer garments with lots of positive ease, which is the direction I’m taking this.

Stay tuned! There may be drama and disaster. I have no idea. But for sure this’ll be entertaining.
